Apple is a series photographed across Indian Country in 2012, from coast to coast, witnessing countless ancestral lands and tribal lands. Its human subjects focus on friends and family in my Eastern Shawnee tribal community and cultural access cultivated along the East Coast. Having grown up in the DC suburbs, I have been colloquially referred to by my family as an apple (a pejorative for culturally disconnected Natives). Here, I attempt to own that disconnection and subsequent reconnection, moving through the grey areas of being a mixed, urbanized Native.
